Mobile windshield repair in Charlotte is the small job that saves the big one. A stone thrown up on I-77 or I-485 leaves a chip; left alone, a chip can run into a crack, and a crack usually means a new windshield. Impex Auto Glass, based at 5641 David Cox Rd in Charlotte, brings chip and short crack repair to wherever the car is parked: the driveway, the office lot, the apartment space. This page explains what can be filled, how the repair is done and why it pays to book it soon.

Charlotte Mobile Auto Glass is the mobile service of Impex Auto Glass for Charlotte and the Lake Norman towns. It is not connected with any other business using a Charlotte auto glass name.

Three things decide whether a windshield can be repaired: the size of the damage, how deep it goes and where it sits. Impex’s own rule is that a repair may be possible when the damage is small, shallow and away from the edges of the glass.
| Damage | What it usually means | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A small chip, bullseye or star break | Usually repairable | Resin can fill the break and stop it spreading |
| A short single crack | Often repairable | ROLAGS treats single line cracks up to 14 inches as repairable |
| A crack that reaches the edge | Usually replacement | The edge is where the glass is bonded to the car |
| Damage right in front of the driver | Often replacement | Even a good repair can leave a mark in your line of sight |
| Damage in the camera’s view behind the mirror | Ask first | The forward camera looks through that area |
| Several breaks, or a crack still growing | Usually replacement | The glass is weakened in more than one place |
For size there is a published standard. ROLAGS, the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard run by the National Windshield Repair Division, says stone breaks up to two inches in diameter and single line cracks up to 14 inches are repairable. ROLAGS calls a crack of six inches or less a short crack and anything longer a long crack. Shops also use rules of thumb that are easier to picture: damage smaller than a dollar bill is likely repairable, and Impex describes small chips as smaller than a quarter. Those are rules of thumb, not law, and the technician still looks at the glass before deciding.

Why sooner is better
A chip is an open break in the outer layer of glass. Every day it stays open, dirt and water can get into it, and a dirty break is harder to fill cleanly. Temperature swings put stress on the glass too: a cold morning followed by the defroster, or a hot afternoon followed by the air conditioning, can be enough to turn a chip into a running crack. A pothole or a hard slam of the door can do the same.
Until the repair, a few habits help. Keep the chip clean and dry, avoid pointing the defroster straight at it on full blast, do not slam the doors, and avoid car washes. A piece of clear tape over the chip keeps out dirt and water until the technician arrives.

Three short steps: where the chip is, your vehicle and how to reach you. Impex comes back with a quote and a time to come to the car.
How a mobile chip repair is done
- The technician checks the damage for size, depth and position, and tells you honestly whether repair is the right call.
- The break is cleaned of glass fragments, dirt and moisture.
- A repair tool is fixed over the chip and resin is worked into the break so it fills the open spaces.
- The resin is cured and the surface is finished level with the glass.
- You look at it together. A filled chip is stronger and much less visible, though some mark can remain.
Because the job happens at the car, a chip repair fits neatly into a working day. The technician can do it in a workplace lot while you are at your desk, or at home while the car sits in the driveway. A repair also keeps the original windshield in place, so there is no new glass to bond and no drive-away wait for adhesive.
Mobile auto glass repair beyond the windshield
Repair with resin is a windshield job. Door and side windows are tempered glass that shatters into small pieces when it breaks, so they are replaced instead. Impex says side window replacement usually takes 30 to 60 minutes and the car can be driven straight away. Back glass takes one to two hours, with the rear defroster left off for 24 hours. Both can be done at your car, the same as a chip repair.
Where the van comes for chip repair
The I-77 corridor is a common place to pick up a chip: busy lanes, trucks and work zones all throw up stones. The mobile service covers north Charlotte and the towns along that road, from windshield replacement in Huntersville at Gilead Road and NC 73, to Cornelius auto glass at Catawba Avenue and Davidson at Griffith Street, up to windshield replacement in Mooresville beyond the Lake Norman Causeway. Denver, on the west side of the lake, is covered too.
North Carolina law also asks trucks to keep their loads in. G.S. 20-116(g) says no vehicle may be driven on a highway unless it is loaded to prevent any of its load from escaping, and trucks over 7,500 pounds carrying rock, gravel or stone must keep the load six inches below the walls and covered by a tarp or similar cover. That does not stop every stone, which is why a repair kit in a van is useful.
Chip repair for work vans and company cars
A chip in a work van or a company car is a problem twice over: the vehicle is off the road while it is fixed, and a crack that grows means a longer job later. Impex describes itself as fleet focused and says it stocks glass that fleets commonly need, and its stated mission is accurate, transparent and efficient auto glass service while minimizing downtime. For a business in Huntersville, Cornelius or Mooresville, that usually means booking the repair at the yard or the job site, where the vehicle is parked anyway, rather than sending a driver across town.
What a repair cannot do
Resin restores strength and stops a break from spreading, but it is not new glass. It will not remove scratches or wiper wear, it cannot rebuild an edge crack, and it is not the answer for damage in the area the forward camera looks through if the mark would affect what the camera sees. In those cases the technician will tell you so, and replacement is the honest answer.
Paying for a chip repair
Glass damage normally falls under comprehensive coverage in North Carolina, paid less your deductible, and the state has no law that waives the deductible for glass. A chip repair may cost less than your deductible, so compare the two before you claim. Some policies include full glass coverage, which changes the sums. A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points, though the NCDOI notes that many insurers look at how often you file claims. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who does the repair, and Impex works with all major insurance providers.
When the chip is past repair
If the technician finds the damage too big, too deep or in the wrong place, the next step is a new windshield, and that can be done at the car too. Our mobile windshield replacement in Charlotte page explains that visit, including calibration of the forward camera on cars that need it.

How big a chip can be repaired?
ROLAGS treats stone breaks up to two inches across and single cracks up to 14 inches as repairable. In practice, position and depth matter as much as size, and the technician decides at the car.
Can a chip repair be done in a parking lot?
Yes. Chip repair needs no new glass and no adhesive cure, so it suits a workplace lot, an apartment space or a driveway, as long as the glass is dry.
Will the chip disappear completely?
Not always. A good repair fills the break and makes it much less visible, but a faint mark can remain.
Should I claim a chip repair on insurance?
Compare the cost with your comprehensive deductible first. Some policies include full glass coverage. Impex can talk it through and works with all major insurance providers.
What should I do until the repair?
Keep the chip clean and dry, cover it with clear tape, avoid blasting the defroster at it and do not slam the doors.
