Rain, Wind and Cold: How Weather Shapes a Mobile Glass Visit

A mobile glass visit happens outdoors, or at least outside a shop, so the weather has a say in it. Most of the time it makes no difference at all. Now and then it moves an appointment by a few hours or to a different spot. This article explains why, so a call about the forecast does not come as a surprise, and what you can do to keep the visit on time.

Why rain stops a windshield, but not always a chip

A new windshield is held in by a bead of urethane adhesive laid on the frame of the car. The Auto Glass Safety Council says windshields and side glass are part of the vehicle’s passenger restraint system and must be installed properly for airbags to deploy safely, and that the windshield aids in occupant retention. Water on the frame or the glass gets in the way of that bond, so a windshield is never set in the open while it rains.

Side and back glass are replaced into the door or the body rather than bonded across the front of the car, but the inside of a car door is still no place for rain. A chip repair needs dry glass too, because water in the break keeps the resin out. The short answer to windshield replacement in the rain: not in the open, but very often under cover.

Cover makes the difference

  • A home garage is the simplest answer, if it is wide enough to open both front doors fully.
  • A carport works in steady rain with little wind.
  • A covered parking deck at work or at an apartment complex gives a level, dry space, with the manager’s agreement.
  • A covered loading area or a service bay at a business can work for a fleet vehicle.

Tell Impex Auto Glass what cover you have when you book. If the forecast turns, Impex will talk to you about moving the car under cover or choosing another time.

Wind, dust and pollen

Wind matters more than people expect. It blows grit and dust onto the frame just as the adhesive goes on, and it can drive rain sideways under a carport. Around Lake Norman, open lots near the water catch more of it than a sheltered street. A garage or the lee side of a building is the fix.

Cold and the drive-away time

The AGSC calls the time a car should stay still after installation the minimum drive-away time, and it says that time varies with the type and brand of adhesive, the atmospheric conditions at the time of replacement and many other factors. Temperature and humidity are part of those conditions. Impex says most cars are back on the road within two hours of a windshield, and the technician gives you the right time for your job and your day.

Weather and camera calibration

Many newer cars need their forward camera calibrated after a new windshield. A static calibration is done with targets in front of the parked car and needs level, clear ground. A dynamic calibration is done by driving, and I-CAR notes it may need roads clear of rain and snow, without heavy traffic or tight curves. Impex states that it performs calibration on site after windshield replacement and can do both kinds in one visit; on a wet day, the dynamic part may wait for the road to dry.

After the visit, whatever the weather

Impex’s aftercare advice for a new windshield is to avoid washing the car and slamming the doors for 24 hours. Rain on the outside of a finished windshield is no problem; a pressure washer aimed at the edges is. For back glass, leave the rear defroster off for the first 24 hours.

Booking around the forecast

If the damage is a small chip, book soon whatever the weather, since water and dirt make a chip harder to fill: see mobile windshield repair in Charlotte. Questions drivers ask

Can a windshield be replaced in the rain?

Not in the open. Under a garage, a carport or a covered deck, most jobs go ahead. Otherwise the visit is moved.

Can I drive in the rain after a new windshield?

Yes, once you have been told the car is safe to drive. Avoid car washes and slamming the doors for 24 hours.

Does cold weather change how long I wait before driving?

It can. The AGSC says drive-away time varies with the adhesive and the atmospheric conditions. The technician gives you the time for your job.
